For more than a century, Geebung RSL has been part of the fabric of Brisbane’s northside, bringing together veterans, families and the local community through a shared commitment to remembrance, support and mateship.
The Geebung Zillmere Bald Hills Aspley RSL Sub-Branch celebrated its centenary in 2023, marking 100 years since the opening of the original Geebung Memorial Hall in April 1923.
From “The Hole in the Wall” to Geebung RSL
The story began when the local Gerns family gifted land for a memorial hall to honour five local servicemen who lost their lives during the First World War.
Built by volunteers and officially opened by Queensland Governor Sir Matthew Nathan, the hall quickly became more than a place of remembrance.
Affectionately known as “The Hole in the Wall”, it served as a meeting place for returned servicemen and a gathering space for the wider community. Over the years, it hosted dances, film screenings, social gatherings and even a health centre for mothers and babies.
As the veteran community grew following the Second World War, so too did the Sub-Branch. A new memorial club opened in 1982, helping establish the community institution recognised today.
A Legacy of Service and Support
Over the decades, the Sub-Branch expanded to represent veterans and families across Geebung, Zillmere, Bald Hills and Aspley.
Today, its work extends beyond commemorative services. Through veteran advocacy, welfare assistance, social activities and community outreach, the Sub-Branch continues to support those who have served and their families.
Visitors to Geebung RSL can also discover reminders of this history through the Remembrance Wall, Walk of Honour and commemorative displays.
Honouring the Past, Supporting the Future
The Sub-Branch remains committed to preserving the stories of Australian servicemen and women for future generations. Through local school partnerships, commemorative events and youth engagement initiatives, it continues to connect the next generation with Australia’s military history.
More than 100 years after the first memorial hall opened its doors, the original commitment remains unchanged: to honour service, support veterans and strengthen community connections.
